biography
1960 born in Düsseldorf, Germany
lives and works in Berlin, Germany and Stockholm, Sweden
Axel Lieber uses everyday objects as references and alienates their form, often by rearranging, reducing or fragmenting them. These interventions often lead to alternative functionalities of the objects. He semantically reduces the density of the found objects and fills the resulting gaps with new content. Axel Lieber studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and graduated with an MFA. In 1992, he co-founded the artist group “inges idee”, which focuses on art in public spaces. Lieber taught as a lecturer at the Malmö Art Academy in Sweden and was a visiting professor at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, among others.
He has been a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm since 2016. His works are represented in various important collections, including the contemporary art collection of the Berlinische Galerie.
